    Ivan McKee MSP

    Minister for Trade, Investment and Innovation

    Ivan's career has involved a number of senior roles in manufacturing and business, managing companies in the UK as well as Poland, Finland, Croatia and Bosnia.

     

    Early in his career, Ivan spent two years with VSO in Bangladesh. He is currently a trustee of the charity CEI, which supports education and health projects in Bangladesh.

     

    Ivan has been MSP for Glasgow Provan since May 2016. Brought up in Glasgow, he studied at the University of Strathclyde and the University of Newcastle.

    Marian Dunbar

    Skills Co-ordinator

     

    Marian leads on The Data Lab MSc programme in the Skills Team at The Data Lab. She has more than 20 years’ experience of working with students, academics, researchers and innovators in Scottish Universities.

    Heather Thomson

    The Data Lab

    Heather has 12 years experience in project and programme management roles, in both the public and private sector with extensive experience in the development and delivery of training. Prior to joining The Data Lab, she managed a £5 million research programme at the University of Edinburgh with a strong focus on training and capacity building in data skills. In her role with The Data Lab, Heather is responsible for management of the extensive Skills programme which includes The Data Lab MSc, Industrial Doctorate (PhD/EngD), Online Learning, Executive Education and CPD.

    Elizabeth Hollinger

    Aggreko

    Elizabeth is the head of Analytics and BI for Aggreko, and leads a team of data engineers, data scientists, analysts and developers who use data to drive value across their global business, She has spent the last 12 years working in a variety of industries, helping them use their data to solve business problems, she has a passion for helping people understand the value of data and loves to communicate complex ideas in a simple way to enable effective insight-driven decision making.

    Bethany Rodgers-Rintoul

    As Delivery lead for MBN Academy, Bethany is responsible for a variety of student led initiatives such as the Data Lab MSc Placement Programme, working in partnership with a large amount of Scottish organisations to ensure that the students are matched to the most relevant project depending on their skills and experience. Working with student cohorts from 11 Scottish Universities, Bethany coaches aspirant Data Scientists, Data Engineers, Data Analysts and Data Consultants on areas such as Employability, soft skills and communication. Bethany’s background is in experienced hire talent acquisition, working with innovative technology and data organisations in Scotland.

    Glenn Exton

    Scottish Enterprise

     

    Glen has held Director Roles, nationally and globally within public and private sector organisations, focused on digital transformation, advanced analytics, business intelligence and innovation. Glenn has been very fortunate to live and work across Australia, USA, Singapore, Geneva and now Edinburgh, being employed by the Royal Australian Navy, Hewlett-Packard, G2G3 and Scottish Enterprise. Glenn is a champion and advocate of The Data Lab and has sponsored two MSc’s interns in 2018 and now, three more in 2019. Glenn's motto is “make everything count - don’t waste a day, you get one shot at life, so make a difference, learn from others and pay things back”.

    Saleem Bhatti

    University of St Andrews

     

    Saleem is a professor in the School of Computer Science at University of St Andrews. He is interested in the design, use and performance of computer communication systems, architectures, protocols and applications, including performance analysis, security & privacy, and mobility. He has a preference for practical work, using test-beds - He likes to build and break things! He is interested in Internet architecture and how it effects the interaction between the network, the application and the user. ILNP (https://ilnp.cs.st-andrews.ac.uk) is currently an exciting area of work for him.

     

     

    At St Andrews, he is the Director of the Engineering Doctorate (EngD) in Computer Science, and he is also the Industry Contact for the School of Computer Science.

    Dave Oliver

    RBS

    Dave heads up the Performance Insights function for the Finance division of RBS. His team process data from over 50 sources across the organisation involving billions of rows of data to transform into tailored insight that is effectively distributed to over 30,000 members of staff across the UK. They specialise in a wide range of Data Science/Engineering areas ranging from AI to ETL, from mobile apps to data visualisation and from self-service tools to behavioural science.

     

    His background is in business technology and data having worked for the 15 years in web, data science and BI roles in various functions such as Communications, Risk, Operations, Retail and latterly taking on a senior role within Finance.

    Andrea Walker

    CYBG

    Andrea joined CYBG in summer 2018, on the Data Lab MSc Student Placement. Her dissertation focused on identifying vulnerable customers using Classification algorithms. In October, she became a permanent member of the Big Data team.

     

    Andrea studied Mathematics and Statistics, before moving to Glasgow University to undertake an MSc in Data Science. Since becoming a permanent member of the team, she has been able to apply machine learning to a variety of projects within the bank.

     

    Caroline Parkinson

    University of Edinburgh

    Caroline is sector lead for Creative Industries at University of Edinburgh Data Driven Innovation Programme and for the previous 4 years was a freelance consultant in the creative industries, innovation and skills, as well as a professional photographer.

    Caroline studied Business and Politics, alongside developing her creative practice in fashion, design and photography. From 2010 -14 Caroline was Director of Film, TV, Music, Creative Industries and Skills at Creative Scotland. Caroline led her own consultancy practice using design to enable business transformation, alongside her photographer practice.

     

     

    Liam Cavin

    Scottish Government

    Liam Cavin is a statistician working for the Scottish Government, on open data publication. This means that he is focused on giving people access to machine readable data in a form that is easy to find, free to use, and can be compared and re-used alongside other sources of information. He studied biology and forest ecology, before specialising in statistics and analysis. Working in the Government Statistical Service for 5 years, he has covered a diverse range of topics, including; construction industry statistics, data visualisation and international aid.

    As Director of Academy & Client Services at MBN Solutions, Rob has spent his career at the sharp end of Talent Acquisition practice for the Data & Technology sectors. Working as Delivery Partner for The Data Lab's MSc. Placement Programme, Rob designed and deployed the highly successful Employability framework that has seen over 200 aspirant Data practitioners placed into Scottish organisations over the last 3 years. In addition to sitting on The University of Glasgow's School of Maths & Stats Industrial Advisory Board and acting as Talent Lead for DMA Scotland, Rob was recently recognised by Data IQ as one of their most influential Data and Analytics practitioners in UK organisations.
